Japanese Magewappa Cedar Wood Box
Magewappa, originating in northern Japan (particularly the city of Odate in Akita Prefecture) in the Edo period, is a craft where thin cedar (or cypress) boards, softened with hot water, are bent by hand and secured with strips of cherry bark.
In Odate, the Kurikyu family house, founded in 1874 and now run by the sixth generation, met during our recent trip to northern Japan, perpetuates this art with a delicacy and respect for traditions that give each piece a rare authenticity.
This 2-compartment box (diameter 12.7cm, height 10.5cm), created by Kurikyu artisans, is very representative of the magewappa technique and gives off a wonderful cedar scent. It is ideal as a delicate decorative object or candy box (magewappa boxes are particularly suitable for food use). It is presented in a cardboard box, which will be wrapped in a beautiful fabric according to the art of Korean pojagi.
Magewappa, or "curved wood", is a 400-year-old Japanese tradition that involves cutting thin strips, particularly of cedar, from Japanese forests, keeping only those whose grain matches the desired appearance. The strips are boiled to soften them and then curved around custom-designed shapes. Characteristic of the magewappa technique, the assembly and fixing of the elements is done using pieces of cherry bark. Each element is worked to be perfectly in harmony. The entire process lasts several weeks.
