Hida Shunkei round wooden and urushi lacquer box
This round box made of light wood, which contains an interior compartment is made by Suzuzen, in Aizu-Wakamatsu, (Fukushima Prefecture). Its elegant silhouette (diameter 12cm, height 10cm) is highlighted by a translucent urushi lacquer applied to the amber wood using the Hida Shunkei technique. This process consists of superimposing thin layers of clear lacquer to reveal the natural grain of the wood, accentuating its depth and shine. On the lid and base, the lacquer is applied in thicker layers, creating a subtle contrast with the body of the box, where the wood's grooves remain visible.
Crafted using the traditional magewappa method, the wood is steam-bent and then secured with a cherry bark fastener (kabazaiku), giving the box lightness, strength, and flexibility. This artisanal technique, unique to the northern regions of Japan, gives the piece a warm, understated elegance.
Founded in 1832, Suzuzen in Aizu-Wakamatsu perpetuates the legacy of one of Japan's oldest lacquer traditions, developed since the Edo period. This region is particularly renowned for its refined utilitarian objects, designed for everyday use as well as for special occasions. Heir to seven generations of craftsmen, Suzuzen today combines ancestral gestures with contemporary creation, selecting high-quality materials and applying natural urushi lacquers by hand, according to rigorous processes passed down for nearly two centuries.
This box can be used for presenting food, sweets, or as a decorative object.
