A superb vintage Japanese bento box in excellent condition, made in the traditional magewappa style from curved strips of cedar wood with cherry bark fastenings. It contains 2 compartments, one of which is deep. The components fit together perfectly, reflecting the quality of the craftsmanship.

On the top of the lid is the signature of the maker. A carrying cord, the ends of which can be tied at the top, adds a very elegant touch to the whole. A beautifully simple mingei-style piece, perfect as a decorative object.

Magewappa, or 'bent wood', is a 400-year-old Japanese tradition that involves cutting thin strips of wood, particularly cedar, from the forests of Japan, keeping only those with the grain to match the desired appearance. The strips are boiled to soften them, then bent into custom-made shapes. Characteristic of the magewappa technique, the elements are assembled and fixed using pieces of cherry bark. Each element is worked to ensure perfect harmony. The whole process takes several weeks.
