Natsume (tea caddy) lacquer and gold, matsu (pine) and ume (plum blossom) motif by Naohiko Kurayama

Sale price€530,00

This natsume (Japanese tea caddy) was handcrafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques, applied in several layers to a very lightweight wooden container. It is a medium-sized natsume (chū-natsume), used in the preparation of usucha (light tea) in the Japanese tea ceremony.

The piece is decorated with a lovely motif of pine ( matsu ) and plum blossoms ( ume ), together a symbol of resilience and the promise of renewal. The slender branches and delicate flowers are made in maki-e with gold powder using two techniques: in light relief (hira -takamakie ) and without relief ( hira-makie ). The urushi lacquer (interior and exterior) is a very beautiful glossy black.

This natsume was made by Naohiko Kurayama, a 20th-century Japanese master lacquerer from Yamanaka, Ishikawa Prefecture, a mecca for Japanese urushi lacquer. He is renowned for the finesse of his maki-e decorations and his mastery of classical techniques. His work, at the crossroads of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics, is appreciated for its refinement and high standards.

This piece dates from the Shōwa era (1926-1989). It comes with its protective paulownia wood box ( tomobako ) closed with a braided cord ( sanadahimo ), on which are inscribed the name of the work, the signature of the craftsman and his official seal.
