Natsume (tea caddy) gold lacquer, Toki no Sato (“ibis village”) motif by Wakashima Takeshi (Sōsai)

Sale price€1.050,00

This natsume (Japanese tea caddy) is handcrafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques, applied in multiple layers to a very lightweight wooden container. It is a standard-sized natsume (chū-natsume), used in the preparation of usucha (light tea) in the Japanese tea ceremony.

Its magnificent and contemporary design, entitled Toki no Sato (Ibis Village), covers the entire exterior of the piece. Made of lightly embossed gold maki-e (takamakie), it features a poetic motif of stylized aquatic foliage, evoking the peaceful landscapes of a riverside village. The interior of the natsume is entirely adorned with nashiji, a precious finish obtained by sprinkling fine particles of gold on a lacquer background.

This natsume was created by Wakashima Takeshi, also known by his artist name Sōsai. Born in 1940 in Wajima (Ishikawa Prefecture), he is a master lacquer artist renowned for his virtuosity in maki-e and nashiji. Winner of numerous awards, including at the New Japan Art Exhibition, the New York Art Contest, and in Paris as part of the celebrations for the bicentennial of the French Revolution, Wakashima Takeshi has established himself as one of the major figures in contemporary lacquerware in Wajima. He was also vice president of the New Japan Art Institute.

This copy dates from the Heisei era (1989-2019). It comes with its protective paulownia wood box (tomobako), inscribed with the work's name, the artisan's signature, and their official seal (on the base of the box). A white silk protective cloth (tomonuno) bearing the artist's seal, as well as an information sheet (shiori) detailing their profile, are also included. A second protective cardboard box (not pictured) is also included.
