Natsume (tea caddy) Japanese urushi lacquer and gold powder maki-e decoration, botan (peony) and ume (plum blossom) decor

Sale price€730,00

This delightful, rather large natsume (Japanese tea caddy) has been handcrafted using traditional techniques of shiny black urushi lacquer applied in several layers to a light, turned wooden container, which has then been decorated with a magnificent array of flowers, notably peonies (botan) and plums (ume). The plum blossoms are worked with delicate mother-of-pearl inlays, using the Japanese raden technique.

This natsume was made by craftsman Issai Saijo, who was born in Osaka in 1937 and trained under his father, himself a famous maki-e craftsman.

It is a unique example dating from the Shōwa era (1926-1989). It is accompanied by its paulownia wood protective box (tomobako), on which is written the name of the craftsman with his official seal, the name of the work, and its braided sanadahimo cord.
