Japanese urushi lacquer box by Ariko Horiuchi

An exceptional lacquer work by artist Ariko Horiuchi, based in Hokkaido, Japan, around this chestnut wood box which hides some secrets under its beautiful natural cotton bag. It can indeed be used in 2 ways, high or low, by a game of lids and shapes that respond to each other.

Its touch is incomparably soft, revealing the depth of the multiple layers of black lacquer with delicate red reflections. Ariko san's work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions throughout Japan and featured in prestigious publications. She thinks of her works as objects of daily use adapted to a contemporary lifestyle. A wonderful gift to offer or to offer oneself.

This piece is a one-off.

COMPOSITION Chestnut wood and urushi lacquer

To make this unique object, Ariko san applied with a brush 7 layers of traditional urushi lacquer from lacquer trees sap from Iwate prefecture in Japan. Between each layer the object is left to dry in a large wooden box for 8 hours at 20°-25°C and a humidity of 60-70%, and is also rubbed with sandpaper between at each step and once dry. This gives the object not only its unique soft appearance provided by traditional urushi lacquer but also its exceptional durability.

Traditional Japanese lacquer, urushi, is made from the sap of the lacquer tree (Rhus Verniciflua), which flows out after cutting the bark. It is a very precious material, a tree will only give a maximum of 200ml of sap in its life, which is worked by craftsmen each specialized in a particular stage. It takes many slow and meticulous operations to give life to lacquered objects. It is the oldest craft in Japan! Initially used to protect and waterproof objects, this immutable craft has become an art of extreme sophistication.
