Under a slightly translucent ivory-white glaze, warmer earthen tones emerge, while a fine network of crackles animates the entire surface. Variations in shade and the subtle traces left by the firing process give each cup a singular character. Its size is suitable for both coffee and tea.

The Ceramist
Born in 1984 in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, Noriyuki Furutani grew up in a family of potters: his father, Michio Furutani, was a renowned figure in Shigaraki ceramics. A 2005 graduate of the ceramics department at Kyoto Saga University, he went on to train under ceramist Takashi Nakazato. His career has led him to work not only in Japan but also in the United States and Denmark, notably at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Now based in Shigaraki, he creates pieces for daily use, drawing inspiration from the ceramic traditions of Karatsu, Korea, and China.

Technique and Decoration
This cup is made using the kohiki technique, inherited from Korean ceramics and developed in Japan based on Joseon-period models. A dark clay is covered with a white slip before being finished with a transparent glaze, giving the piece its soft white appearance while allowing the nuances of the underlying clay to show through. For Noriyuki Furutani, the kohiki technique is not used to achieve a perfectly uniform surface: variations in the slip and glaze, small irregularities, and the fine network of crackles create a living surface that will evolve with use.

Place of manufacture
Japan (Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture)

Dimensions
Diameter 7.2 cm - Height 8 cm

Weight
166 g

Materials
Ceramic

Period
Contemporary

Care instructions
After use, empty the water and let air dry.
