Natsume (tea caddy) lacquer and gold, kiku (chrysanthemums) and sōka (wildflowers) motif by Murata Dōkan

Sale price€650,00

This natsume (Japanese tea box) was handcrafted using traditional Japanese urushi lacquer techniques applied in several layers to a very light wooden container. It is a chū-natsume, a classic-sized natsume.

On a deep, shiny black urushi lacquer background, a very elegant decoration of chrysanthemums (kiku, symbol longevity, nobility and perfection in Japan) and wild flowers (sōka, symbol of natural beauty, simplicity and harmony with nature in Japan) was applied with gold powder, using the maki-e technique (in light relief ( shishiai-maki-e ) for certain flowers). The interior of the natsume is covered with a very beautiful shiny black lacquer and a gold border. The craftsman has engraved his name at the base of the natsume.

This natsume was made by the art craftsman Murata Dōkan, active in Kyoto during the Shōwa era.

This is a unique example dating from the Shōwa era (1926-1989) . It comes with its protective paulownia wood box (tomobako). on which is indicated (on the bottom) the name of the craftsman with his official seal and a braided cord (sanadahimo).
