Natural indigo and shibori Japanese Noren, lines pattern

Sale price€300,00

A piece of contemporary art and craftsmanship in the purest Japanese tradition, this noren was made by Toshiharu Furusho, a Master Craftsman based in Tokushima prefecture and the 6th generation of indigo dyers. Furusho san uses only natural materials to dye his textiles, working with indigo in the traditional way in a region that continues to value indigo. His work has won numerous awards, including the title of 'Master Contemporary Craftsman'.

This noren is 69cm high and 90cm wide, made up of 2 pieces (each 45cm wide) knotted in the centre with threads that have themselves been dyed with natural indigo. It has a superb contrasting lines pattern obtained using a complex shibori technique, i.e. knotting to keep the parts of the fabric (made of thick cotton) that are not dyed once they have been dipped in the indigo vat.

This noren is signed with the craftsman's hanko, and a 7.5cm return of the textile at the back allows a rod to be slipped over it so that it can be hung on a wall like an abstract painting, or in a doorway or window.
