Set of 3 Japanese wooden plates, black urushi lacquer and metallic blue pigment
These 3 Japanese plates (sold together) have been made by the craftsmen of Asada, a family-run business specialising in woodwork and lacquerware in Yamanaka, where they have been based for 3 generations.
Each is a different size, with a high rim to match its diameter, and is made from hand-turned zolkova wood. Black urushi lacquer has been applied on one side using the fuki urushi technique (the object is delicately rubbed with lacquer) on 2 of the plates (the 3rd has been left natural, revealing the blond of the wood, creating a superb contrast) and an elegant metallic blue on the other side.
Ideal for an aperitif or as pocket trays, they'll add a delicate touch of Japanese craftsmanship to your home.

The traditional Japanese lacquer, urushi, is made from the sap of the lacquer tree (Rhus Verniciflua), which flows out after incision of the bark. It is a very precious material, a tree will only give a maximum of 200ml of sap in its life, which is worked by craftsmen each specialized in a particular stage. It takes many slow and meticulous operations to give life to lacquered objects. It is the oldest craft in Japan! Initially used to protect and waterproof objects, this immutable craft has become an art of extreme sophistication.
