On Sunday 2 June 2024 from 2pm to 5pm, a new format for an exceptional small group workshop to discover the art of Japanese incense and make your own bespoke incense.

Laurence, the founder of Atelier Ikiwa, will be opening the doors of a beautiful Parisian flat (located on the Solférino metro station, in the 7th arrondissement) for an afternoon of Japanese incense making, immersion and sharing.

She has brought back from Kyōto, in collaboration with a highly reputed Japanese incense house founded in the 18th century, some kits containing the ingredients traditionally used in the manufacture of pressed incense, inkō. Each workshop participant will receive his or her own kit containing 9 sachets of different natural ingredient powders, a sachet of binder and 2 bottles of scented oils. An incense paste will be made by measuring out the ingredients according to taste, and incense pieces will then be made using moulds (each participant will be able to use the shape(s) of their choice). Around fifteen pieces of pressed incense will be made, which once dry (after 3 days) can either be lit with a flame or left in a dish to release their delicate fragrance. The kit and any unused ingredients will be kept by the participants.

To complete the experience, Laurence will talk to you about Kōdō, one of Japan's three traditional arts (along with the tea ceremony and ikebana), its gestures, principles and traditional games, and will let you "listen to the incense" through her personal collection. Finally, she will share her precious addresses in Japan related to incense.

These moments of sharing in small groups (5 participants + Laurence) will also be an opportunity to taste Japanese teas accompanied by a small sweet.

The cost of the workshop is €80, including the making kit, a 3-hour welcome, a presentation of the kōdō, tea tasting and a sweet.

The photos of the teas and treats are not contractual, the selection may vary according to the season. The kit does not include moulds or other accessories.

This workshop is non-cancellable once booked but is transferable if you can find someone to replace you (Laurence will help by posting the information on Atelier Ikiwa's Instagram if you give her at least 5 days' notice but will have no obligation of results). The workshop is not suitable for children.

To be burnt, the pressed incense must be placed on a fireproof support and monitored during combustion.
