Shu Hirai Kurogane Kozara plate

Sale price€68,00

Japanese ceramic plate by Shu Hirai, whose dark, deeply textured surface evokes ancient iron. Its muted, slightly metallic brown tones vary with the light and accentuate the relief of the material. This kozara, a traditional small plate used in Japanese tableware, is particularly well-suited for small individual portions, side dishes, or Japanese pastries, and can also be used as a decorative object.

The Ceramist
Born in 1990 in Nantan, Kyoto Prefecture, Shu Hirai graduated in 2015 with a master's degree in ceramics from Kyoto Seika University and currently works in Kyoto. His career is closely linked to ikebana, which he discovered during his studies and which plays an important role in his reflection on the form and use of his pieces. His work explores the possibilities of materials, glazes, and their layering, with particular attention paid to how surfaces absorb and reflect light.

Technique and Decoration
This plate belongs to Shu Hirai's Kurogane series, whose name evokes iron and refers directly to the appearance the ceramist sought to achieve. For this series, he developed his own glaze to recreate the look of ancient iron, a material that inspires his colors and textures. The glaze is applied using techniques such as sponging and brushing, with successive applications that create an irregular, layered surface. The result combines various muted, metallic brown tones, the nuances and relief of which are revealed differently depending on the light.
