Japanese mountain cherry wood (yamasakura) shaker boxes

Sale price€320,00

North of Kyōto, next to the lovely village of Miyama and surrounded by cedar and cypress-covered mountains, the Unoh family has been lovingly making Shaker-style boxes for 30 years, using the same technique as magewappa, or 'bent wood', a 400-year-old Japanese tradition.

The trunks of mountain cherry wood (yamasakura) from Japan's forests are cut into thin strips, keeping only those whose grain matches the desired appearance. The strips are boiled to soften them, then bent into custom-designed shapes and fitted with small copper nails. Each element is worked to ensure perfect harmony. The base of the box is made from pine wood. The boxes are then oiled and waxed. The whole process takes several weeks.

This box with its handle is a multi-purpose hybrid object, for storing objects or transporting them, an elegant tea tray for example, a charming basket, or for holding a beautiful bouquet of dried flowers. It has the tranquillity of objects that age well, that develop a patina over time, companions for a lifetime. Its perfect curves and beauty make it a perfect addition to any interior or decorating style.
