Ikkanbari box made of woven bamboo, washi and kakishibu

Sale price€255,00
Format:

Handcrafted in the Kiso region of Nagano, this exquisite box combines the suppleness of woven bamboo with the delicate texture of Japanese washi paper, finished with a transparent urushi lacquer that reveals the underlying materials, from the weave to the fibers. Its deep, nuanced brown color comes from kakishibu, a tannin extracted from the persimmon fruit, which lends the surface a warm and vibrant patina. Closed with a cord, the box is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship applied to a contemporary vision. It is available in two sizes.

The technique and the decor
Made using the traditional ikkanbari (paper collage) technique, this box combines a woven bamboo frame with several sheets of washi (Japanese paper) made from kōzo (mulberry) and mitsumata fibers. Each sheet is applied without glue, directly bonded to the raw kiurushi lacquer (natural lacquer), which provides both adhesion and strength. The entire piece is then coated with kakishibu (tannin extracted from persimmon), whose color intensifies over time, giving the surface its warm, nuanced hue. A thin layer of transparent urushi completes the piece, protecting it from moisture and enhancing its satin sheen. This layering of bamboo, paper, and lacquer creates an object that is both lightweight and durable, whose deep hues and visible texture reflect the refined craftsmanship of Kiso artisans. Although this technique has long been used for bento boxes, these pieces are now appreciated for their beauty and versatility, serving as both storage and decoration.
