Manganese ceramic bowl from the Tokinoha workshop

Sale price€87,00

This bowl from the Tokinoha studio features a slender silhouette, the material appearing as if carved from dark rock with a beautiful contrast of glazes. The matte surface, a deep grey with a slight brown tint, reveals subtle nuances and drip marks, as if frozen by the heat of the kiln and softened by the very delicate off-white glazed rim. The piece as a whole radiates a sense of calm and precision, faithful to the sober, contemporary aesthetic of Kyōto's Japanese ceramics.

The ceramicist
Founded in Kyōto by Daisuke and Tomoe Kiyomizu, the Tokinoha studio is distinguished by an approach that bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern design (Daisuke is a descendant of the famous Kiyomizu family, guardians of the tradition of Kyōto's kiyomizu-yaki). The pieces, handmade by the studio's ceramicists, bear the hallmark of a reflection on simplicity and texture, seeking to express the beauty of daily life through pure and balanced forms.

Technique and decor
This bowl is crafted from ceramic using a manganese-rich clay, a natural element that gives the piece its characteristic grey-brown hue. The surface, left intentionally matte, bears witness to a reduction firing that brings out metallic nuances and traces of the fire. Inside, the irregular drips visible under the light are the result of a slight excess of glaze that partially vitrified during firing, creating organic and unpredictable effects. This contrast between the precision of the form and the spontaneity of the decor captures the spirit of Tokinoha: a constant dialogue between mastery and randomness, between the human touch and the natural transformation of the material.
