Shu Hirai's Kakugi blue bowl

Sale price€175,00

Japanese ceramic bowl by Shu Hirai, whose generously open shape offers a beautiful volume. Its deep, muted blue spreads across a deliberately irregular, almost mineral surface. Its slightly asymmetrical shape particularly highlights this work of material and the variations of the blue depending on the light. Both a serving piece and a decorative object, it can be used at the table, hold a floral arrangement, or simply be displayed on its own.

The ceramicist
Born in 1990 in Nantan, in the Kyoto prefecture, Shu Hirai graduated in 2015 with a master's degree in ceramics from Kyoto Seika University and now works in Kyoto. His path is closely linked to ikebana, which he discovered during his studies and which plays an important role in his reflection on the form and use of his pieces. His work explores the possibilities of materials, glazes, and their layering, with a particular focus on how surfaces absorb and reflect light.

Technique and decoration
This bowl belongs to Shu Hirai's Kakugi series. After an initial firing, the ceramicist sprays cobalt onto the surface by blowing it through a straw, a process that produces this deep blue with irregular variations. A white glaze is then applied locally with a sponge: during firing, the layering of materials creates the grainy and nuanced surface characteristic of the series. Far from a uniform flat color, the blue is thus built through a multitude of variations in density and texture that give the piece its particular depth.
