Grey-green ceramic katakuchi bowl by Shihō Takada

This katakuchi bowl by Shihō Takada is distinguished by the purity of its line and the softness of its grey-green glaze. The ceramicist
Born in Nara in 1977, Shihō Takada studied fine arts at Kyoto University before continuing her research at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramists' Technical Institute. She then studied under Shinzo Tomibe in Fushimi, Kyoto, before opening her own studio in Kameoka, in the same prefecture. Her work is distinguished by a constant search for balance between form and texture, and by an extreme attention to proportion. She explores ceramics in delicate forms that reveal a profound sensitivity to light and shadow.

The technique and the decor
This katakuchi bowl is handcrafted from fine ceramic covered with an ash glaze (haiyū) mixed with natural oxides, which, during firing, reveal nuances ranging from soft gray to light green. The surface displays a very fine network of crackles (kan'nyū), typical of Shihō Takada's work, giving the piece a vibrant and organic texture. The high-temperature firing allows the glaze to melt delicately into the clay, highlighting the subtle variations in relief. The katakuchi thus combines density and lightness in a simple and profoundly poetic expression.

Traditionally, katakuchi are used to pour sake or sauces during Japanese meals. This piece can also be used as a small serving vessel, to present a delicate dish, or simply as an object of contemplation.
