Large kurinuki wooden dish decorated with makie (gold powder) and raden (mother-of-pearl)
Large plate, or dish, kashibachi ( used to present sweets or pastries, particularly during the tea ceremony), hollowed out of zelkova wood using the Japanese technique of kurinuki: a solid block of wood was hollowed out by hand with specific tools to create this very organic form where the trace of the gestures made is visible, giving it a raw and massive appearance. This impression is counterbalanced by the beautiful decoration from the Rimpa Korin artistic school (to learn more about this movement, read our article ) made of maki-e (gold powders) with raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay and representing camellias and honeycombs and under which transparent urushi lacquer has been applied, revealing the wood grain.
It is an ancient object that has had a life, which we imagine to be very full. It symbolizes in itself the wabi sabi spirit so anchored in the spirit of Japan: refinement in apparent simplicity (wabi) and the patina of age (sabi). Time has passed inexorably and it was necessary to renounce the initial perfection, to reveal a new one, a perfection in imperfection, traces that have not been erased but which on the contrary give all its charm to the object.
An object that carries the message the craftsman wanted to convey: attention to detail, perfection of gesture, which time has continued to reveal, a true softness beneath its raw side. The wood draws a map, the mother-of-pearl has faded in places, it is an object that conveys life stories, and there is nothing more moving.
