Natsume (tea caddy) lacquer and gold, shunjū (spring-autumn) decoration by Kakinoki Akira

Sale price€790,00

A magnificent piece by Kakinoki Akira, a master lacquerer from Wajima (Ishikawa Prefecture), this natsume (the tin in which matcha powder is placed during the Japanese tea ceremony) is covered in urushi lacquer of a beautiful, glossy black. The decoration of cherry blossoms and maple leaves in gold powder is executed with great precision, primarily in flat relief ( hiramaki-e ), with some very subtle relief decoration ( taka maki-e ) visible in places, particularly in the stamens. The interior is finished in glossy black lacquer. The overall effect is one of great elegance with contemporary touches, faithful to the conventions of maki-e.

The design combines the cherry and maple blossoms, a traditional spring-autumn association ( shunjū / sakura-kaede monyō ), which celebrates the continuity of the seasons and an awareness of the passage of time. The depth of the lacquer highlights the crisp lines of the leaves and blossoms.

Kakinoki Akira (1926-2009), a master lacquer artist from Wajima trained in the family workshop of Kakinoki Hōsan, enjoyed a distinguished career. He was a frequent nominee for the prestigious Nitten Prize (with several award-winning selections, notably in 1995), received recognition at the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition and the Japan New Crafts Exhibition, and served on the boards of applied arts societies.

This is a hira-natsume, whose shape resembles a go stone box. It is mainly used for koicha (thick tea) in some schools.

This is a unique piece dating from the Heisei era (1989–2019). The artist's signature is present at the base of the natsume, which comes with a protective paulownia wood ( kiribako ) box closed with a cord ( sanadahimo ), on which are the artist's name, his official seal and the title of the work, as well as a signed protective cloth ( tomonuno ) and an information document ( shiori ) presenting the craftsman.
