Small gray-green ceramic katakuchi bowl by Shihō Takada

This small katakuchi bowl by Shihō Takada is distinguished by the purity of its line and the softness of its gray-green glaze. The ceramist
Born in Nara in 1977, Shihō Takada trained at Kyoto University in fine arts before pursuing her research at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramists' Technical Institute. She then studied under Shinzo Tomibe in Fushimi, Kyoto, before opening her own studio in Kameoka, Kyoto. Her work is distinguished by a constant search for balance between form and texture, and by an extreme attention to proportion. She explores ceramics in delicate forms that reveal a deep sensitivity to light and shadow.

The technique and the decor
This small katakuchi bowl is hand-crafted from fine ceramic covered with a glaze of ash (haiyū) mixed with natural oxides which, during firing, reveal shades ranging from soft gray to light green. The surface features a very fine network of cracks (kan'nyū), typical of Shihō Takada's work, which gives the piece a lively and organic texture. The high-temperature firing allows the glaze to blend delicately into the earth, highlighting the minute variations in relief. Katakuchi thus combines density and lightness, in a simple and deeply poetic expression.

Traditionally, katakuchi are used to pour sake or sauces during Japanese meals. This piece can also be used as a small serving vessel, to present a delicate dish, or simply as an object of contemplation.
