Sale price€120,00
Size:

This kiri (Japanese paulownia) tray, made in Kyoto by the family workshop Kyoto Kiribako Kōgei, combines the exceptional lightness of paulownia with a black finish obtained from charcoal. The natural texture of the wood remains visible beneath this deep shade, revealing the craftsmanship of its surface. Its shape with cut corners and balanced proportions is suitable for serving tea as well as showcasing ceramics or other precious objects. It is available in two sizes.

The artisan
Founded in 1877 in Kyoto, the family workshop Kyoto Kiribako Kōgei has perpetuated traditional Japanese woodworking techniques for several generations. The Tahara family has specialized in making kiribako, paulownia wood boxes designed to protect precious objects, especially silk textiles and ceramics, from light, wear, and seasonal variations in temperature and humidity.

Over the generations, the workshop has expanded its production to include household objects, while retaining the joinery techniques and knowledge of wood that have made its reputation. Contemporary trays and boxes thus extend a craftsmanship passed down for nearly 150 years.

Technique and decoration

Kiri (Japanese paulownia) holds a special place in traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Its extremely light wood is prized for its stability, insulating properties, and ability to limit moisture exchange. These qualities explain its long-standing use in making cases and boxes intended for the preservation of precious objects. Despite its low weight, paulownia offers good resistance for this type of use.

To make these trays, the workshop selects mature paulownia wood, worked according to a traditional method of manual splitting. Rather than seeking a perfectly uniform surface, this technique follows the natural structure of the wood and reveals an irregular relief, formed of fine longitudinal lines. This work requires time and great precision, as each piece of wood reacts differently depending on its grain.

The elements are assembled according to the Japanese sashimono technique, a traditional woodworking method that allows the wooden pieces to be joined without metal nails or screws.

The black finish is obtained from charcoal, used to color the wood while preserving its natural texture. Unlike an opaque and perfectly smooth finish, this coloring reveals the relief of the paulownia, whose irregular lines remain perceptible beneath the black. The matte appearance of the surface and the depth of its shade give the tray a distinctive character, while retaining the natural qualities of the wood.

Shape and use
Available in two sizes, small and medium, this tray can be used for serving tea, as a catchall tray, or for arranging objects in a bathroom. Its lightness makes it particularly pleasant to handle, while its edges help keep objects in place.
