Kiyomizu ceramic vase by Daisuke Kiyomizu
This vase by Daisuke Kiyomizu (Kyōto) is a very balanced and soft piece. Its rounded shape, narrowing towards the neck and then flared, highlights a clear glaze crossed by fine cracks. The green and beige shades blend into the earth, giving the surface a matte and peaceful shine. The piece exudes a calm, deeply Japanese and elegant presence, imbued with the delicacy specific to Kyoto ceramics.
The ceramist
Daisuke Kiyomizu was born in Kyoto in 1980. A descendant of a Kiyomizu lineage (secondary branch), he studied environmental design before devoting himself to ceramics. In 2009, he founded To Ki No Ha, a workshop located in the Shimizuyaki Danchi district, the birthplace of Kiyomizu-yaki. His understated and refined creations perpetuate the understated elegance of Kyoto ceramics while adapting them for contemporary use.
The technique and the decor
This piece is part of Kiyomizu-yaki, the emblematic ceramic tradition of Kyōto (Kyō-yaki). The vase is made of stoneware and then covered with a transparent glaze with green and blue highlights. The high-temperature firing reveals a network of kan'nyū, fine cracks visible to the naked eye, and very slight variations in tone related to the firing. The foot reveals the clay in its central area, which accentuates the reading of the shape.
