White porcelain vase by Akihiro Maeta, Living National Treasure
This white porcelain vase is the work of Japanese Living National Treasure Akihiro Maeta, born in 1954 in Tottori Prefecture. A 1977 graduate of the Department of Crafts, Ceramics Section, at Osaka University of Arts, Maeta-san has dedicated his career to mastering white porcelain, or hakuji. In 2013, he was designated a Living National Treasure, recognizing his exceptional expertise in this field.
Maeta-san is particularly renowned for his unique chamfering technique. This method involves shaping the clay on a potter's wheel and then delicately deforming it with the fingers at a specific stage of drying, creating faceted surfaces that subtly play with light. This approach gives his pieces a distinctive softness and roundness, resulting in works that combine formal simplicity with aesthetic depth.
This small vase boasts an elegant silhouette with delicately hand-carved facets, highlighting the purity and finesse of the white porcelain. This piece perfectly illustrates Maeta-san's commitment to the refined aesthetics and sophistication of Japanese ceramic art.
It is signed at the base by the artist and comes with its original wooden box (tomobako), on which the artist's name and official seal are affixed. A protective cloth (tomonuno) bearing the artist's seal, as well as an informational document (shiori) detailing the ceramist's profile, are also included.
