Large white porcelain vase with grape motifs by Kondō Hiroshi

Sale price€1.300,00

This large and heavy faceted vase-jar (mentori tsubo) is a work by Kondō Hiroshi (1936-2012), a ceramist from Kyoto recognized for his work in the continuity of the legendary Kondō lineage, and more particularly in the legacy of his father, Kondō Yūzō (1902-1985), Living National Treasure, whose mastery of Kyoto porcelain techniques he has extended.

Made using the yūri-kō technique, this vase features red underglaze motifs, achieved by applying copper oxide before firing. The decoration depicts bunches of grapes ( budō-e ), a traditional motif associated with abundance and prosperity in Japanese ceramics. The vase's surface is textured with faceting (mentori), creating a subtle interplay of light and shadow that highlights the variations in the glaze.

The works of Kondō Hiroshi are featured in prestigious museum collections, including the British Museum. This impressive piece, signed at its base, comes with its original wooden box ( tomobako ), bearing the artist's handwritten inscription and official seal. It is also covered with a protective cloth ( tomonuno ), also bearing the artist's seal.
