Sang-in Kim white baekja porcelain faceted vase

Sale price€245,00

Korean baekja white porcelain vase, heir to the aesthetic of the Joseon dynasty, where white, sobriety of form, and restraint hold an essential place. Sang-in Kim offers a contemporary interpretation here: a slender, eight-faceted silhouette, whose various planes catch the light and reveal the delicately bluish nuances of the porcelain. An elegant vase that holds a few flowers or a branch and can also be displayed on its own as a decorative object.

The ceramicist
Born in 1976 in Daejeon, Sang-in Kim is a Korean ceramicist specializing in white porcelain. After higher studies in design at Chung-Ang University, he trained for twelve years under the ceramicist Lee Gee-jo before becoming independent in 2010 and setting up his own kiln in Anseong in 2012. Through his studio, Haeinyo, he develops a contemporary interpretation of the baekja of the Joseon period, adopting its sobriety and balance to create objects intended for everyday life. His work was notably recognized in 2016 by the Presidential Award at the Korea Crafts Exhibition.

Technique and design
Baekja, literally "white porcelain," became one of the major expressions of Korean ceramics under the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). This vase belongs to Sang-in Kim’s body of work centered on gakmyeon, the faceted form. Eight vertical panels structure the volume and subtly vary the perception of white depending on the light. The translucent glaze features the slight blue-green tone characteristic of Haeinyo porcelains, punctuated in places by tiny dark traces naturally linked to the material. The vase is signed at its base in cobalt blue.
