Porcelain vase and peonies by Manji Inoue, Living National Treasure

Sale price€1.400,00

This white glazed porcelain vase by Manji Inoue, measuring 20 cm high and 21 cm wide, is distinguished by its perfectly balanced round shape and delicate peony engravings. The floral motifs are meticulously sculpted in relief, subtly capturing the light to create a refined play of shadows, while remaining true to the artisan's understated and refined aesthetic. The porcelain's brilliant whiteness, achieved through controlled firing, highlights the fine details and underscores the timeless elegance of the piece.

The engraving technique he employs involves directly carving into the surface of the semi-hard clay. At this stage, the porcelain is still malleable enough to allow for precise engraving, yet strong enough to maintain the integrity of the form. Inoue uses specialized tools, such as burins and gouges, to create signature motifs like the peonies on this vase. The depth and thickness of the engravings are carefully adjusted to produce a subtle relief effect and a refined interplay of light and shadow after firing.

The clay used is a local kaolin of exceptional purity, characteristic of Arita porcelain. This material is worked on a potter's wheel to achieve optimal fineness and lightness. After engraving, the piece is delicately polished to remove any imperfections and highlight the contrast between the smooth and engraved surfaces. Firing in a high-temperature kiln (approximately 1300°C) fixes the designs into the very structure of the porcelain, revealing a brilliant whiteness and a remarkably smooth texture.

This vase is signed (engraved) by the artist on its base and comes with its protective wooden box, which bears the artist's name and official seal and is closed with a sanadahimo (braided cord). A magnificent piece that will appreciate in value.

This artwork dates from the 90s and is in good condition.
