Small wabi-sabi vase from Ohara san

Sale price€48,00

Each vase created by Japanese ceramicist Ohara-san is a unique piece, where tradition meets the spontaneity of nature. While they all share a common aesthetic—pure, organic forms—each creation is distinguished by its subtleties, making each vase unique.

The surface of these vases, marked by a network of delicate cracks, embodies an essential part of their charm. These cracks are achieved thanks to the local clay rich in iron and silica, which reacts to the extreme temperatures of traditional wood-fired kilns (Ohara-san works in Shiga Prefecture, the birthplace of Shigaraki-yaki ceramics). The whitish shades and touches of earthy brown, punctuated by small random marks, testify to the direct contact with the ash, forming vitrified textures and patterns unique to each piece.

Receiving one of these vases means accepting the idea of a surprise: discovering a unique piece, shaped by the elements and deeply rooted in the authenticity of Japanese ceramics. Small (between 6 and 8cm high), they will be perfect alone or in groups as a centerpiece or on a piece of furniture, with or without plants. If several vases are ordered at the same time, we will make sure to send you very different shapes to create a beautiful visual harmony.

Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼) ceramics, born in the heart of the mountains of Shiga Prefecture (Japan) in the 13th century, embodies the authenticity of an art shaped by earth and fire. Modeled in local clay rich in iron and silica, then enhanced by long firings in wood-fired kilns, it reveals unpredictable surfaces, adorned with glazed textures and subtle shadows, perfectly reflecting the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Although the Shigaraki-yaki style is traditionally associated with brown or earthy hues, due to the local iron-rich clay and prolonged firing in wood-fired kilns, each ceramicist creates their own unique style by modulating techniques, particularly the effect of ash as well as the firing temperature and atmosphere.
