Round box in curved wood and urushi lacquer Kiso Shunkei
This round bentwood box is made in a small artisan workshop in the Kiso Valley, famous for its dense forests and the beauty of its cypress (hinoki) wood. Its refined appearance highlights the wood's warm amber color, enhanced by transparent urushi lacquer applied using the traditional Kiso Shunkei technique. The elegant black raised lines, made of urushi lacquer, mark the fasteners and provide a discreet contrast that highlights the finesse of the woodwork.
The Kiso Shunkei technique, originating in the Kiso Valley in the 17th century, is renowned for its clear, translucent finishes that reveal the wood's natural grain. This method requires careful application of thin layers of pure urushi lacquer, which protects the wood while highlighting its natural nuances. Kiso craftsmen primarily choose local cypress, renowned for its lightness, strength, and soft texture.
The wood is crafted using principles similar to magewappa. The wood is curved into thin strips and assembled with bark ties, enhanced with lines of black lacquer that give the piece a subtle graphic character and timeless elegance.
This versatile box can be used to present food, sweets, or as a decorative item. It comes in a cardboard box.
