Large wabi sabi vase-sculpture by Kazuhiko Sato
A large, remarkable vase-sculpture, a highly decorative piece whose presence captures the eye and enhances the space in which it is placed. This spectacular piece, both powerful and ethereal, is the work of Kazuhiko Sato.
Sato-san is a renowned Japanese ceramicist born in 1947 in Fujisawa (Kanagawa Prefecture), and graduated from the prestigious ceramics department of the Tokyo University of the Arts. He studied under Michi Kajimoto and Koichi Tamura, two renowned Japanese potters who are Living National Treasures.
Kazuhiko Sato's work has been presented in major exhibitions and galleries around the world (London, New York, Sydney, etc.), including many solo exhibitions, and he has won numerous awards for his remarkable work.
For this vase-sculpture he used a combination of Shigaraki and Seto clays with quartz inclusions, which he shaped by hand with an extremely complicated personal technique, which gives the surface its raw and sandy side and this form both organic and very balanced. A work of contemporary art accentuated by the abstract lines in contrasting hues while being timeless and deeply Japanese. Its form transmits something unique: a great strength in its architectural rigor, powerful, but also a sensation of lightness, something aerial and almost unreal because depending on the angles it appears to be balanced in an unexplained way. The black base that accompanies it and on which it is placed, like a sculpture, allows it perfect stability while accentuating this aerial side. It is the immense talent of Sato san to have succeeded in building such an imposing and heavy vase that gives such a sensation of delicacy. A centerpiece that will bring a remarkable Japanese touch to a contemporary interior.
This vase-sculpture is signed at its base “SATOH” (Kazuhiko Sato’s usual signature) and 1982, the year of its creation, in Roman letters. It comes with a protective paulownia wood box and a black wooden base to ensure its stability and sculptural role.
